DIY Berkey Water Filter

Our Pur water filter that was attached to our kitchen faucet broke after about 8 years of use. After some research we decided to build our own Berkey water filter.

Each Black Berkey filter is rated for 3000 gallons. We used two filters in our DIY setup for a total of 6000 gallons of filter life. The filters cost $120. We used two 12 quart (3 gallons) Walmart stock pots which were $10 each, and a $16 stainless steel Berkey replacement spigot. The total cost of 6000 gallons of pure, clean drinking water is $156, which equates to less than 3 cents per gallon. We use about 2.5 gallons of filtered water each day so our filters should last for about 7 years.

We have been using our DIY Berkey for a few weeks and it is working flawlessly. If you want to see how we built it you can watch this video that guides you through this simple project: https://youtu.be/CjGxUAOrkrM

Our completed DIY 3 gallon Berkey for $36 plus the cost of two black Berkey filters.
